Goater returning to Manchester City as Academy Coach

IslandStats.com
Shaun Goater is set to return to Manchester City as an academy coach as part of a Premier League scheme.

The former City striker will work on a 23-month placement through an initiative that aims to increase the number of BAME coaches working full time in professional football. He is expected to work across the age groups at the City Football Academy, with the ambition of landing a sustainable coaching job that can help inspire the next generation of coaches from a diverse background.

Goater has long been a fan favourite dating back to his time at the club that included 103 goals in 211 games and successive promotions. The Bermuda forward was instrumental in the Blues battling back from the lows of Division Two to stability in the Premier League, from scoring the goal that set up their famous play-off win over Gillingham to embarrassing Gary Neville in the final derby at Maine Road.

In addition to managing several businesses and enjoying regular work as a pundit since hanging up his boots, Goater has long held an interest in coaching. The 51-year-old, who holds a UEFA A License, has spent time shadowing at the Etihad and has also taken on a number of roles and has worked with young players at Ilkeston FC and Macclesfield Town.

Goater is the latest former City player to find a new home in the club's academy; Gareth Taylor started off working there before becoming head coach of City Women, while Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira began his coaching career with City's Under-21s.
