Xavier Thomas-Bassett was back in action competing with International Development Academy (IDA) Valencia Under 14’s at the Mediterranean International Cup in Spain.
Thomas-Bassett and his teammates would play two matches on the day.
IDA Valencia defeated Kaptiva Sports Academy 2-0 in their 2nd group match of the tournament. Thomas-Bassett preserved the shutout and led with an outstanding save when his team was leading 1-0 in the game. Reports back from the coaching staff have been very positive on his participation thus far.
Thomas-Bassett is attending the tournament through his enrollment in the Warwick Academy High-Performance program and their partnership with the International Development Academy.
Thomas-Bassett plays his club football with FC Bascome.
After experiencing the joy of winning through the opening two matches, Thomas-Bassett and his IDA Valencia Under 14 teammates would get a taste of and an eye opener to the level of football in Spain when they took on Professional Academy outfit RCD Espanyol in a 10-0 loss.
The Barcelona-based club, whose senior team competes in the Segunda Division of the Spanish Football League system, is one of the most successful youth academies in Spain- offering 11 Developmental Programs in which players learn and train with the best.
Despite the heavy loss, Thomas-Bassett demonstrated a brave performance with some key saves - never dropping his head against the heavily favored opponent, and can take pride in his performance.
