Toms & Bedwas Looking Forward to the Season

IslandStats.com
Brynley Toms and his Bedwas RFC teamates and coaches shared comments ahead of the 2017/18 season. The boys were playing a few frames of pool ahead of what promises to be an intense preseason preparation.

Stefan Sankala, newly promoted Bedwas backs coach, was full of energy when discussing the challenge ahead.

He said: “The boys are in good spirits and we’re chomping at the bit to get into the season. We want to hit the ground running and there will be a lot of mental preparation required for the long season ahead.”

He added: “The boys have been working on their personal programmes over the last few weeks and we will be having some extra sessions so that we are fully geared up for an early start on the August Bank Holiday weekend.”

Sankala’s sentiments were echoed by his partner in crime, newly promoted forwards coach, Pat McGee.

He said: “The planning has been going well – lots of meetings! But it’s great that all of the team management are singing off the same hymn sheet. We are very happy with the new personnel that we have brought in.”

Asked about how ‘the Wass’ might go one better this year and aim for top league honours, McGee was quick to respond.

“It’s all about tweaking how we do things. We achieved a semi-final and won the Foster’s Cup last year so we know how to win. We just want to implement some small changes, perhaps in how we operate in open play.”

The players are also in a very focused frame of mind, despite an anonymous complaint that preseason might “interfere with watching Love Island!”

Bedwas’ own Bermuda international, prop Toms, was happy with preparations. He stated: “We’re looking forward to a good preseason launch that will get us on track for the Premiership.”

It was also great to hear from Mike Young, a player who has been selected to train with the First XV after graduating through Bedwas RFC Youth.

He said: “Staff and players have been very supportive. Time will tell how I get on, but I’ve been training 5 times a week and it’s a great opportunity!”

Bedwas RFC will be playing two preseason games prior to our first league match away to Pontypridd RFC on 26 August. All of our preseason fixtures are taking place away from home due to the on-going Pitch Improvement Scheme at the Bridgefield.
