Smith in Edmonton

Tyler Smith got a taste of what the competition will be like in the 16-19 year old Triathlon World Championships in Chicago in two weeks’ time as he finished 30th out of 65 starters and 55 finishers at the CAMTRI (American Triathlon Confederation) Junior Elite Series race in Edmonton.

Smith clocked a time of 58:13, which covered the 750 meter Swim, 20km Bike and 5km Run. He also got a taste of cold weather racing with the temperature at race start around 5 degrees!!

In addition to most of the leading Junior Triathletes from Canada and the CAMTRI region (e.g. Brazil and USA) the field featured athletes from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and other nations that have already sent their athletes to North America to prepare for the World Championships. The race was won by Australia’s Matthew Hauser in 53:52.

Smith emerged from the swim in 9.47 with Hauser and a lead group out of the water in 8:44. After a slow transition due to wearing an extra layer to fight the cold, Smith found himself in the 4th chasing pack of 12 athletes on the Bike and they gradually lost time on the leaders over the three lap bike. The bike is Smith’s strongest discipline but being caught so far back in the pack he did not have Triathletes around him with the biking ability to pull the group up to the groups ahead.
