The 2006 Commonwealth Games, held in Melbourne Australia was my first International Event. I was not even finished with High School yet and was toeing the line with some of the best Triathletes in the World.
I was young, naive and excited to race. Luckily I had a fantastic race, a race I still regard as my best performance thus far in my career. A top 10 at 18 years old propelled me into the Professional Triathlon World, simultaneously turning a dream into a reality. Fast forward 8 years, after many ups and downs, I was heading back to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Triathlon at the Commonwealth Games is very competitive, and I was a little apprehensive to race because I have not been focusing on the ITU style of triathlon quite as much this year as in the past. My swim and run are a little off the mark, leaving me unsure of how I would perform.
The swim was fast and aggressive from the start, but I made the front group…just. A hard hilly bike left little chance to catch my breath, I really enjoyed the course though. Nice to race on a challenging bike course.
Did my best to hold my own on the run, and finished 8th. The same position as I did in Melbourne, 8 years previous. Pleased and relieved. Did I mention the Governor of Bermuda was there watching me race-pretty cool. I even managed to have lunch with him the day before. Thanks to everyone for the support and well wishes. I love representing Bermuda at major games, and can’t wait for the next chance.
