Olympic Sailing Launch Ramp Collapsed

IslandStats.com
A main ramp allowing boats to access water at the Marina de Gloria sailing venue has collapsed today amid strong waves in the latest indication of poor construction work for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The temporary structure, the main access point for boats, collapsed due to "high tides and a stormy sea".

There was no one was hurt and a repair job has already begun.

Bermuda Olympic sailors Ceci Wollman and Cameron Pimentel will be watching this closely as they will be taking part in Sailing.

It is being undertaken by the company responsible for initial construction work, with it expected to be fully restored within four days, well before action is due to begin on August 8th.

"Due to a technical issue, the temporary boat ramp and one coach boat pontoon at the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition venue, Marina da Gloria, is currently unavailable for use," World Sailing told insidethegames in a statement.

"Rio 2016 contractors are working on the issues and World Sailing is closely monitoring the efforts.

"Alternate boat ramps are available for sailors to use off of Flamengo Beach and from Marina da Gloria.

"Alternate pontoons for coach boats are now being used around Marina da Gloria."

The incident does, however, raise concerns over construction work, with waves today no higher than normal for the Brazilian winter.

Water also infiltrated television studies near the Copacabana Bay beach volleyball venue today in a separate incident.

Iron boards were used to contain the water.

Concern over the quality of construction heightened in April when two people died following the collapse of an elevated coastal cycle path between Ipanema and the main Olympic hub of Barra de Tijuca.

"In the run up to the Games, things happen," added International Olympic Committee (IOC) Presidential spokesman Mark Adams.

"This is not any different and says nothing about general quality of venues or anything else - it is one specific issue."

Rio 2016 told the IOC at their Executive Board meeting today that all venues were completed and ready for competition to begin.
