The prestigious Garda Optimist Meeting event officially kicked off, now in its 42nd edition thanks to the organization of Fraglia Vela Riva. An event that, over the years, has earned a place in the Guinness World Records and continues to be a point of reference for the world of youth sailing globally.
This year too, the regatta attracted an extraordinary number of participants, with over 1200 children from all over the world – 38 nations represented including Bermuda – ready to compete and show their talent on the waters of Garda Trentino.
Although today’s adverse weather conditions prevented the 10th Country Cup from taking place, a regatta between nations with one representative from each country, the energy and enthusiasm of the athletes were not diminished. The day was characterized by the evocative opening ceremony, with the iconic parade of all the athletes through the streets of Riva del Garda, with live musical accompaniment and greetings from the authorities. Speakers included the Councilor for Public Works of the Municipality of Riva del Garda Pietro Matteotti, Walter Cavallucci, Secretary of the International Optimist IODA Class, and Andrea Camin, President of Fraglia Vela Riva.
Tomorrow, with the hope of more favorable weather conditions, the Meeting’s series of regattas will begin, with three days dedicated to qualifications and the finals which will be held on Sunday, as per the Meeting’s tradition, Easter day.
