Countdown to IODA North American Championships

Bermuda Team
IslandStats.com
Hundreds of young sailors including four from Bermuda will have their skills tested in the waters outside historic Nelson’s Dockyard, when the Optimists North American Championships, the biggest youth racing class in the World, returns to Antigua and Barbuda, the sailing Capital of the Caribbean. The event which is exclusively for sailors ages 8 – 15 begins on July 10th and runs until July 18th.

Last year, the destination welcomed 165 serious competitors from 23 countries as far as New Zealand, Japan and Singapore.

We held a grand opening ceremony, complete with cultural presentations from the National Youth Choir, the Urlings Iron Band, Shiva Dancers, Beautiful People, Vitus Cultural Dancers, Mr. Moves and feature performer Tizzy, that closed off the show with a huge firework display.

This year we will once again welcome the competitors with a Carnival themed opening ceremony. The event is a great mood-setter for the 60th Carnival celebrations. We would like to encourage the Festivals Commission to highlight the activity, as one which persons in Antigua, looking to experience the carnival vibes, prior to the Opening can come out to – as you have been doing with your various Carnival stops.
