Fourteen boats went to the startline for the 2016 edition of the Edward Cross Long Distance Race which began in the St. George's harbor.

Stephen Dickinson and Pat Young claimed the 2016 Edward Cross Long Distance Race title in what can only be described as a marathon event.

It took Dickinson, who has now equaled the record of winning the race four consecutive times alongside Alton Millett 5:34:19, Dickinson has also won the race for the 19th time.

Right from the start the race looked as if it was going to be an all-day affair, and the way the winds shifted, dropped out, picked up and then dropped out again it proved to be just that.

At the start, Ben and Malcolm Smith were right on the line, however they stalled and could not get the momentum going forward, Dickinson was able to maneuver his way to the front of the fleet five minutes into the race, however they were only some fifty yards into the race.

It took the lead boats 29 minutes to get out of the St. George’s Town Cut Channel, with the trailing boats already 10 minutes behind. Gladwin Lambert who stalled at the start had made his way up to the top half of the Fleet as they made their way around the back of the St. George’s Cut.

With a group of sailors including Dickinson, Lambert, Dale Brangman, Maxwell Curtis and Trey Maxwell, battle the currant before Fort St. Catherine and at one point both Brangman, Lambert and Curtis all held the lead for a brief moment.

Once the fleet rounded the Fort, the winds increased slightly with Dickinson using all his experience to put some distance between himself and the chasing group, two hours down and the sailors had just made it to the Oil Docks off Ferry Reach and Dickinson was well in control followed by Lambert and Curtis.

As the fleet made it’s way up the North Shore, Maxwell joined the party and started a battle for third place with Curtis, the two young skippers battled back and forth for sometime before Curtis was able to break free and begin to challenge Lambert for that second place spot.

The winds shifted and dropped considerably making things a little more interesting and Dickinson stayed in the middle of the course tacking, Lambert went close to the Cruise Ships in Dockyard and Curtis went toward Spanish Point.

It was Dickinson who once again read the wind shifts right and came home victorious, Curtis finished second in 5:51:38 and Maxwell finished third in 5:55:55, however following the race a protest was lodged and Maxwell was Disqualified for using their oar during the race, so third place went to Lambert who crossed the line in 5:58:50.
