Nayan Grant and his Gillingham FC Academy teammates endured a frustrating afternoon on the road as they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against a clinical AFC Wimbledon side.
The young Gills travelled to face the Dons in a highly anticipated Youth Alliance fixture, looking to build on recent positive results in their 2025/26 campaign. Grant, who has established himself as a key figure in the Gillingham defensive unit since securing his scholarship, was tasked with containing a high-pressing Wimbledon attack that has been among the most prolific in the division this season.
Despite a resilient performance from the Kent-based side, Wimbledon managed to find the breakthrough in a tightly contested opening period. Gillingham showed great character to remain in the hunt, pushing for an equaliser through their fluid transitional play, but the hosts eventually doubled their advantage to leave the Gills with a mountain to climb.
Gillingham did manage to claw a goal back late in the contest to set up a tense finale, but the Dons held firm to secure the three points. The result marks a rare setback for Grant and his teammates, who have otherwise enjoyed a productive season highlighted by dramatic come-from-behind draws and high-scoring victories.
The Bermudian defender has been a standout performer for the Academy this term, notably providing key assists and even finding the scoresheet in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Milton Keynes Dons earlier in the season. Grant will now look to regroup with the squad as they prepare for their next league outing, with the focus remaining on their development and climb up the Youth Alliance standings.
