Bermudian tennis player Daniel Phillips has continued his impressive start at Tulane University, securing his new team's second consecutive victory at the Blue Gray Invitational in Birmingham.
In a tightly contested match against Rice, Phillips and his doubles partner, Alec Gaudin, set the tone early. The duo combined for a strong 8-3 win over Rafael Botran and Gabriel Porras, giving Tulane the crucial doubles point.
Phillips then took to the court for the number one singles match against Botran, which proved to be a three-set epic. After losing the first set 7-5, Phillips battled back to level the match at one set apiece with a tense 7-6 victory in the second. In the deciding third set tie-breaker, Phillips held his nerve to clinch the win for Tulane, triumphing 6-2.
Despite a loss for Gaudin in his singles match, Phillips's decisive performances in both doubles and singles were enough to seal the 2-1 victory for the Green Wave.
Bermudian pickleball player Gavin Manders has made a strong start at the Jamaica International Pickleball Open, advancing deep into the Men’s Singles Open draw.
Manders, who is also competing in the Mixed Doubles Open, teamed up with Anais Fang for a hard-fought opening round victory, winning 15-13 against Reinhard Stamp and Dominique Farquharson. However, their run was halted in the second round by the fifth-seeded duo of Kayla Teape and Aman Chatani, who secured a 15-6 win.
Manders's best results have come in the Men’s Singles Open. After a first-round bye as the fourth seed, he battled for 37 minutes to defeat Sosan Munasinghe 11-2. He followed that up with another lengthy victory, taking 51 minutes to dispatch the 13th seed Zeyar Min with a score of 11-5.
His impressive run continued in the fourth round with a 58-minute marathon match against the fifth seed Brandon Tom, which he won 15-7, advancing to the later stages of the tournament.
