Junior defender Alex Dumond scored twice to lead Marquel Waldron and the West Florida men’s soccer team to a 3 - 2 overtime victory over Tennessee Wesleyan at Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn. West Florida led 2 - 0 at halftime, and after Tennessee Wesleyan came back to tie the game and send it into overtime, Dumond knocked in his second goal of the game in the 102nd minute to send UWF home with the win.
Junior midfielder Frank Cope propelled West Florida to a 2 - 0 lead with assists on both of the team’s first half goals. West Florida attempted four shots through the first 30 minutes, and UWF broke through with a goal by junior Waldron at the 30:13 mark off an assist by Cope. The second goal came on an overlapping run by Dumond, as he received a pass from Cope and scored his first UWF goal in the 39th minute.
Tennessee Wesleyan roared back in the second half, out-shooting West Florida 7 - 2 in the half. Tennessee Wesleyan’s first got on the board in the 63rd minute, when Martyn Freestone received a cross from Josh Simnett and drove it by West Florida senior goalkeeper Elliott Purdom. Tennessee Wesleyan kept their hopes alive with the equalizer in the 88th minute, scored by John Carrier off a cross by Freestone.
The teams remained tied through the first overtime period, but Waldron came close to scoring his second goal of the match when he hit the post at the 93:06 mark. It was not until early in the second overtime period when West Florida finally broke through, as senior midfielder Daniel Martini’s corner kick was headed into the back of the net by Dumond, clinching the victory.
West Florida finished the match with a 13 - 9 shot advantage, and West Florida also were awarded four corner kicks compared to none for Tennessee Wesleyan. Elliott picked up two saves in goal for West Florida, while Zach Plaice and Josh Leader combined to stop three shots by UWF.
