Waldron & West Florida Win
Junior Matthew Aldred and sophomore Andre Verardi accounted for all the offense in Marquel Waldron and the University of West Florida’s (UWF) 3 - 0 win at Spring Hill in the 2010 men’s soccer season opener.

Both players scored in their UWF debuts, as Verardi broke the game open with a goal in the 31st minute and Aldred added goals in the 33rd and 52nd minutes.

UWF started slow, as the Spring Hill defense held UWF without a shot through the game’s first 30 minutes. In that same span, Spring Hill attempted four shots but came up empty each time. The tide turned as the Argos won a corner kick in the 31st minute, resulting in the team’s first offensive opportunities with shots by senior Matt Tanner and junior Curtis Brashear.

On a second straight corner kick, UWF finally broke through, as senior Daniel Martini’s corner was headed by juniors Richard Dixon and Sean Reynolds, leading to Verardi turning head-over-heels to tuck the ball into the upper right corner with a bicycle kick and his first UWF goal.

Aldred and freshman Jimmy Merritt subbed into the game after the goal, and after winning another corner, they both factored into UWF’s second goal two minutes later. Merritt’s first touch on the ball came on a corner kick from the right side, a low liner to the near post. Senior Bruno Ferreira flicked the ball through his legs, leading to Aldred’s one touch shot on the back post and a goal on his first touch on the ball.

Up 2-0 after 45 minutes of play, UWF kept the pressure on the Badgers defense early in the second half. Junior Waldron, found Aldred open outside the box, and the English striker turned his defender and lofted a beautiful shot, bending it up and over Spring Hill goalkeeper Cory Bronenkamp for a second goal and the third for UWF.

UWF were not satisfied with just three, as a Reynolds volley in the 54th minute slammed off the left post, and sophomore Will Henderson hit the crossbar in the 76th minute.

UWF finished with 14 shots, four of which were on goal. Spring Hill attempted eight shots, one on target. UWF senior goalkeeper Elliott Purdom made one save in goal, and Bronenkamp also made one save.
