Ryan Roberts Update
This week the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) conducted its final event of 2009 at the beautiful Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort.
The IJGT competitors showcased their skills on the difficult Arthur Hills Course which featured tight tree lined fairways and numerous water hazards. During the opening round, the players had to persevere in the cold driving rain for much of the day and although Sunday’s round brought much of the same rain, warmer temperatures allowed many IJGT competitors to post sub-par rounds.
In the Boys 16-19 Division, Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HHIJGA) student Michael Werenski of South Hadley, MA made a final round charge to capture his fifth title of the season.
Werenski entered the final round six strokes behind fellow HH IJGA student Roberts from Bermuda who carded an impressive even-par round of 72 in first round difficult conditions.
Werenski wasted no time on Sunday birdying three of the first six holes on his outward nine. Werenski would add two more birdies on the back nine for a 5-under par 67 that earned him his fifth victory.
Catapulting into second place was Andy Jimenez of Orlando, FL (HH IJGA) who fired a career best 3-under par 69 during his final round. Sharing third place honors was Andrew Gai of Westport, CT and HH IJGA students Mateo Serrano of Mexico City, Mexico, and Manuel Gomez of San Roque, Spain all finishing the tournament at 148.
Roberts shot a second round 7-over par 79 to finish 9th. Nearly 2000 junior golfers compete on the IJGT representing 43 states and 28 countries. These young men and women will have the opportunity to participate in the national junior ranking system sponsored by Golfweek and Junior Golf Scoreboard.
When asked if he thought he had a chance to win on day two, Werenski had this to say: “I knew that if I were to have any chance of winning, I would have to shoot a 68. I just wanted to stick to my plan and hit one shot at a time.” That plan paid off on day two as Werenski hit seventeen of eighteen greens on his way to his fifth IJGT victory.
