Zeiko Lewis and his Berkshire Varsity Teammates took on a talented squad from Suffield Academy.
Berkshire aimed to build upon its improved play of late and record a second victory of the season, but the team knew it would not come easily. With the sidelines packed full of supporters, Berkshire came out focused and ready to play, from the start it was evident that both teams were ready to play and that both teams wanted a win.
There was good back-and-forth action throughout much of the first half. However, it was the visitors who capitalized first in the 26th minute of the match. Suffield’s Kohei Hotta worked a terrific give-and-go combination with Jordan Glassman, which resulted in the first goal of the day, giving Suffield the 1-0 lead. Not long after Suffield’s goal, the Bears thought they had earned a penalty kick when Suffield defender clearly blocked a cross (albeit, inadvertently) with his outstretched arm. The call was not given, and as the halftime whistle blew the score remained 0-1 for Suffield.
The second half, the play continued to shift back and forth with much of the play occurring in the middle third of the field. Each team generated some good scoring opportunities, but was unable to convert. Suffield’s Hotta missed a golden opportunity when he beat an offside trap in and released a shot wide of the post. Berkshire had its fair share of chances too and in the 60th minute a strong shot by Lewis produced a rebound, which Kyle Lockwood hammered into the top of the goal, leveling the match at 1-1. Following the goal, Berkshire began to take more control of the match and the increased pressure and energy resulted in a go-ahead goal just five minutes after the equalizer. This time it was Ryo Atsumi who netted what proved to be the game winner when he jumped on another rebound opportunity off of Kyle Lockwood’s shot.
