Boxing Legend James ‘Bonecrusher’ Smith alongside coach Chuck Hatcher and Basketball Legend Walter ‘Wali’ Jones joined the Minister of Sports Glenn Blakeney, Minister of Labor and Home Affairs David Burch and Bermuda Football Association Vice President Lee Holder on the lawn of the Grotto Bay Hotel to announce Island Soccer League Commissioner David Bascome has joined the Legends of Sports.
“Bascome’s vision for the Hope for Life programme fit’s into what we do across the United States”, said Hatcher. “We look forward to bringing Legends to Bermuda to spread the message about choices in life as well as having Bascome come to the USA to spread the message of Hope for Life”.
Minster Burch said, “As you are aware Hope for Life was launched locally in May 2008.
The Hope for Life programme focuses on four major areas:
• Provide accurate information about the dangers of drugs, and the downfalls of violence • Teach young people good decision-making skills • Show young people how to recognize and resist negative peer pressure; and • Provide young people with positive alternatives to drug use and violence
Prevention is the focus of Hope for Life.
The programme will also assist young people to develop skills on and off the soccer pitch, provide educational support and career awareness.
Mr. Bascome and the team have visited virtually every school (both public and private), the Corrections facilities and public and private events sharing his positive message with our young people, the sponsorship of the Ministry will assist him in getting the positive Hope for Life message out to a wider audience.
The Hope for Life programme provides our young people with positive choices, providing them with information and the skills to live a drug and violence free life. It also teaches them how to recognize the subtle and overt pressures by those trying to get them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drugs. Providing young people with these skills will assist them in making positive life choices.
Hope for Life is entering its second stage of development. This second stage will see Hope for Life build new memberships and partnerships with other organizations who share the mission of saving our young people from drugs, alcohol and anti-social behaviour. Locally over 1,000 children have joined the Hope for Life programme. We are now expanding into the international arena by joining ports Inside & Out a US Legends of Sports organization.
