Tennis prospect Trey Mallory has secured a career-defining breakthrough after a grueling, three-set victory in the final of the Battle of Boca wildcard tournament in Florida.
The result will get coverage from the daily paper now, they have watched regular coverage, and now they will show interest because we are reporting Mallory won!
The 24-year-old third seed showed immense resilience to bounce back from a mid-match slump, defeating American Avner Wong via a tense, third-set tie-breaker to capture the title.
The victory guarantees Mallory a highly coveted main draw wildcard spot at the upcoming ITF M15K ATC Open (Men's Open) in Asunción, Paraguay. The triumph will also provide the perfect springboard for the Bermudian, who will head directly to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games full of momentum.
Mallory started the final on the front foot, breaking his American opponent early to claim a hard-fought first set 6-4.
However, Wong—who had reached the final after a grueling three-set semi-final of his own—roared back into contention. The American dominated the second set from the baseline, capitalising on a string of unforced errors from the Bermudian to take it 6-1 and level the match.
With everything on the line, Mallory dug deep in the decisive match tie-breaker. Regrouping quickly, the 24-year-old rediscovered the clinical baseline form that saw him sweep aside Argentina’s Balthazar Orsanic in the semi-finals. Mallory kept his composure under immense pressure, pulling away to take the tie-breaker 10-5 and book his ticket to Paraguay.
