Bermudian third seed Trey Mallory enjoyed a dominant double-match day to seal his place in the semi-finals of the Battle of Boca Wildcard event in Florida.
The stakes remain incredibly high at the clay-court tournament, where the last man standing will secure a coveted, direct main draw wildcard entry into the prestigious ITF M15K ATC Open in Asunción, Paraguay.
But while Mallory’s dream of professional transition play is burning brighter than ever, his compatriot Tariq Simons saw his campaign come to an abrupt halt.
The day began on a contrasting note for the Bermudian contingent in the Round of 16.
Simons, who had navigated a grueling, two-match opening day, ran into a brick wall in the shape of Tristan Ryerson. The clinical American completely dictated the tempo, handing Simons a harsh straight-sets defeat, 6-0, 6-2.
On the adjacent court, Mallory faced a much stiffer physical test in his morning match against American Heath Waters.
In a tightly contested opening set where breaks of serve were hard to come by, Mallory showed immense mental fortitude to edge a high-pressure tiebreak. With the momentum firmly in his favor, the Bermudian third seed capitalized on his opponent's errors to comfortably seal a 7-6, 6-3 victory.
With very little time to recover, Mallory returned to the court for his quarter-final clash against another formidable American opponent, Enzo Carvalho.
The physical toll of his morning match seemed non-existent as Mallory put on an absolute clinic. Dominating from the baseline with heavy groundstrokes and efficient net play, he broke Carvalho early in both sets to race to a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The two wins mean Mallory is now just two victories away from securing a life-changing wildcard spot in South America. He moves on to tomorrow's semi-finals in peak form, carrying Bermuda's sole hopes on the Florida Hard Court.
