Bermuda’s Daniel Phillips saw his impressive doubles campaign at the M15 Kayseri tournament in Turkey come to an agonizing end after a dramatic three-set quarter-final defeat.
Following a commanding straight-sets victory in the opening round, the 21-year-old Bermudian and his Bulgarian partner Dinko Dinev faced a formidable international tandem in America's Keshav Chopra and Great Britain's Stefan Cooper.
In a match characterized by sweeping shifts in momentum on the Turkish hard courts, it was the Anglo-American duo who ultimately held their nerve in a tense match tie-break to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
The opening set proved to be a tough affair for the international pairing. Chopra and Cooper found their rhythm early, breaking Phillips and Dinev twice to establish dominance at the net and clinically wrap up the first set 6-2.
Faced with a deficit, the Bermudian-Bulgarian duo staged a superb fightback in the second set. Stepping up their aggression from the baseline, Phillips and Dinev began to dismantle their opponents' serve, breaking at crucial moments to take the set 3-6 and send the quarter-final into a high-stakes deciding tie-break.
With a place in the last four on the line, the final ten-point match tie-break became a cagey, physical battle where margins were razor-thin.
Despite a resilient effort from Phillips and Dinev, who matched their opponents stroke for stroke in the early exchanges, Chopra and Cooper managed to secure the mini-break they needed. The Anglo-American pair closed out the decider 10-7 to seal the victory.
While it is a frustrating exit for Phillips, his deep run into the doubles quarter-finals and his fiercely competitive showing in the singles main draw caps off a highly productive week on the ITF World Tennis Tour as he continues his European summer circuit.
