The 2026 Deloitte Open delivered a masterclass in tension at the Pomander Gate Tennis Club as all three major finals on the card required nerve-shredding third-set match tie-breaks to determine the champions.
On an extraordinary afternoon of attrition, physical endurance and psychological warfare on the hard courts, pre-match strategies went out the window. Instead, the silverware was lifted by the competitors who could best navigate the pressure-cooker environment of the first-to-10-points final-set shootouts.
Chase McCrimmon captured the Men's Singles 'B' championship after coming through an absolute roller-coaster of a final against Cyre' D S Trott.
McCrimmon looked to be in total control early on, breaking Trott's serve twice with aggressive baseline play to claim the opening set 6-3. However, Trott responded magnificently in the second. Dialing in his first serves and cutting down on unforced errors, Trott ran away with the frame 6-1 to completely shift the momentum.
With everything on the line, the ensuing match tie-break became a cagey affair. Trading mini-breaks under immense pressure, it was McCrimmon who found the telling blow at 8-8, reeling off two consecutive points to take the tie-break 10-8 and seal a grueling victory.
The sibling chemistry of Hasan and Numair Khan proved decisive as they edged past the formidable tandem of Jaire Lawrence-Salaam and Darren Woods to claim the Men's Doubles 'B' title.
The Khan brothers broke late to secure the first set 6-4, but Lawrence-Salaam and Woods roared back with some spectacular net play and lethal poaching to snatch the second set 6-4.
In the ultimate shootout, the Khans displayed impeccable court coverage. From 7-7 in the tie-break, they executed a pair of brilliant passing shots to win three straight points, closing out the match 10-7 to secure a memorable family triumph.
In the veteran category, Kendall Cuffy produced a vintage comeback performance to stun Wilfred Gonsalves and take home the Over-60 crown.
Gonsalves looked sharp out of the blocks, utilizing a clever array of slices and drop shots to leave Cuffy stranded, cruising to the opening set 6-2. Refusing to go down without a fight, Cuffy dug deep in the second, breaking Gonsalves at 5-4 to level the match and force yet another tie-break.
Showing tremendous resolve, Cuffy dictated the final moments from the back of the court, wrapping up the tie-break 10-7 to complete a remarkable turnaround and put the cap on a spectacular day of tournament tennis.
