Bermuda’s Daniel Phillips proved to be the difference-maker as Tulane Men’s Tennis secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in Hoover, Alabama.
In a clash that went down to the wire, Phillips was instrumental in ensuring the Green Wave crossed the finish line. The afternoon began with a statement in the doubles competition, where Phillips and his partner Lance Nisbet took their place in the number one spot. The duo, currently ranked No. 35 in the nation, demonstrated their elite chemistry by dismantling UAB’s Kaustubh Holcomb and Ondrej Valek with a clinical 6-3 win, helping Tulane secure the opening doubles point.
The drama then shifted to the singles court, where Phillips and Valek faced off once more in the premier slot. Phillips started the match with intent, showcasing the aggressive baseline play that has become his trademark. However, with Phillips leading 2-1 in the first set, the contest came to an abrupt and unfortunate end as Valek was forced to retire due to an injury.
The retirement handed Phillips the individual win and a crucial point for Tulane in the overall team score. While the Blazers mounted a spirited comeback in the lower seeds, the early foundation laid by Phillips and the Green Wave's upper-ladder strength was enough to secure the narrowest of victories.
The result marks another significant step for Phillips in his standout 2025-26 collegiate campaign, further solidifying his position as one of the most formidable number-one seeds in the American Athletic Conference. With the team firing on all cylinders, the focus now turns toward a crucial run of conference fixtures as they eye a deep postseason run.
