Bermuda’s rising tennis talents faced a challenging transition into the play-off portion of their ITF World Junior Tennis campaign, suffering defeats in both the boys' and girls' classification brackets in El Salvador.
In the boys' 6th to 10th place play-off, the young Gombey Warriors found the going difficult against a clinical Guatemala side. Felipe Bolanos Flores set the tone for the Central American team with a dominant 4-0, 4-0 victory over Bermuda’s Riley Maybury. The result was mirrored in the top singles spot, where Ian Lemcke Morales proved too strong for Trystan Thompson, securing a 4-1, 4-0 win to clinch the tie for Guatemala and leave Bermuda looking to regroup for their final classification matches.
The girls’ squad experienced similar frustration in their play-off encounter against St Kitts and Nevis. Arianna Parra battled hard but eventually went down in straight sets to Sierra Mongerie, falling 4-1, 4-1. The tie was settled in the second singles rubber as Chloe McBrearty faced off against Shreya Rawat. Despite a resilient showing in a tightly contested opening set, McBrearty was unable to sustain the momentum, falling 5-4, 4-1 as St Kitts and Nevis completed the 2-0 victory.
The results mean both squads move into the final stages of the 6th to 10th place bracket, where they will aim to finish their San Salvador campaign on a high note. While the day provided a testing baptism of fire in the play-off environment, the experience remains a vital part of the developmental pathway for the island’s under-14 prospects.
