Tobiah Goodchild produced a series of resilient performances to reach the Men’s Open Singles Semi-Finals at the Miami Championships.
Competing in a high-calibre UTR 9.0 field at the Royal Palm Tennis Club, the 16-year-old showcased his adaptability on the red clay—a surface he rarely encounters on the island.
Goodchild opened his campaign with a clinical display in the Round of 16, sweeping aside Tommy Wey in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. His superior fitness proved the difference in the early stages, allowing him to outlast his opponent in the longer rallies.
The Quarter-Finals saw Goodchild advance following a shortened contest against Mateo Borges. After taking a disciplined first set 6-3, the Bermudian was leading 1-0 in the second when Borges was forced to retire due to injury.
The victory set up a formidable Semi-Final clash against Germany’s Yannick Ulrich, where Goodchild’s run ultimately came to an end in a 6-3, 6-0 defeat.
Despite the singles exit, Goodchild extended his stay in Florida by entering the Men’s Open Doubles. Teaming up with American partner Maximo Gomez, the duo faced a stern tactical test in the quarter-finals against the experienced American pairing of Francisco Montana and Bernard Tefel. In a high-velocity encounter, Goodchild and Gomez struggled to find their rhythm, eventually falling 8-1.
