Bermudian tennis prospect Daniel Phillips produced a statement victory on the collegiate circuit, defeating a nationally ranked opponent even as his Tulane University side fell to a narrow 4–3 defeat against the University of Washington.
The contest began with a dominant display from the Green Wave in the doubles session. Phillips and his partner Lance Nisbet were locked in a stalemate at 4–4 against the Huskies' pairing of Brett Pearson and Soham Purohit when their match was abandoned. The stoppage came as Tulane had already clinically secured the other two doubles rubbers to clinch the afternoon's opening point.
The spotlight then shifted to the premier singles court, where Phillips faced a daunting task against the 121st-ranked Soham Purohit. The match developed into a three-set thriller that showcased Phillips' tactical growth and physical endurance.
The Bermudian started with blistering intent, overpowering the ranked Purohit to claim the opening set 6–1. However, the Washington star demonstrated his pedigree in a grueling second set, surviving several high-pressure exchanges to force a tie-breaker. Purohit eventually edged the frame 7–6 (7–3) to level the match and send the encounter into a decider.
Despite the momentum swing, Phillips showed remarkable mental fortitude in the final set. He regained control of the baseline early on, breaking Purohit's serve twice to sprint to a 6–2 victory and secure one of the most significant individual wins of his young career.
While Phillips’ heroics at the number one spot provided a massive boost for Tulane, the University of Washington proved more clinical across the remaining singles courts. The Huskies fought back to take four of the six singles matches, ultimately edging the overall tie 4–3.
