The island’s tennis calendar is set to welcome back one of its most prestigious events as the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) confirms the return of the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Tournament.
The legacy event, which runs from November 3rd through November 9th, pays tribute to a towering figure in Bermudian sport and social history: William Ernest Rudolph Joell.
The tournament is held in honour of the late W.E.R. Joell, for whom the W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium—the Government Tennis Stadium—is named. Joell was a passionate tennis promoter and a relentless political activist who successfully fought to desegregate the very stadium that now bears his name, opening its courts to all Bermudians in the 1950s.
His lasting legacy is deeply rooted in providing opportunities for local players, and the tournament continues that tradition by providing a highly competitive platform for island talent.
The BLTA has confirmed the tournament will feature a wide variety of competitive categories, offering something for players across the skill spectrum:
Singles: Men's, Ladies' A, and Ladies' B Doubles: Men's, Ladies', and Mixed
As an event officially sanctioned by the BLTA, the tournament will offer valuable ranking points for all participants. The association is strongly encouraging the community to come out in full force, either to compete or to support the players, making the 2025 tournament a resounding success.
