The University of New England (UNE) women’s tennis team, guided by Bermudian Head Coach Jovan Jordan-Whitter, continued its impressive start to the inaugural varsity season, delivering a dominant 7-0 sweep of the University of Hartford in a Conference of New England (CNE) match at the Blue Cyclone Complex.
The triumph improves the Nor'easters' overall record to 6-1 and their CNE standing to 2-1, showcasing the strength of the programme being built from the ground up by Coach Jordan-Whitter.
The tone for the shutout was set early, as the Nor’easters battled to claim the crucial doubles point. At the No. 1 spot, Madeline Frank and Nora Hill staged a spirited comeback, overcoming a 2-4 deficit with four straight games to secure a 6-4 victory. The point was wrapped up moments later as Alyssa Fritschka and Sydney Pelletier won 6-2 at No. 3, quickly followed by Sofia Salcedo Ladaga and Andie Lamontagne who also logged a 6-2 result at No. 2.
The UNE dominance continued through the singles matches, with several players delivering clinical performances: Alyssa Fritschka (No. 5) delivered a flawless victory, not conceding a single game to win 6-0, 6-0. Team captain Sydney Pelletier (No. 6) followed suit, ensuring the second point by not dropping a game either, winning 6-0, 6-0. Madeline Frank (No. 1) sealed the team victory with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 scoreline. Andie Lamontagne (No. 4) added a straightforward 6-2, 6-0 win. Sofia Salcedo Ladaga (No. 3) showed consistency, rattling off ten straight games during her 6-3, 6-4 victory.
The sweep was completed by Nora Hill at No. 2 singles, who was tested in the final moments. After taking the opening set 6-4, Hill endured a second-set battle that culminated in a tie-breaker, which she won 7-4, securing the hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 win to complete the 7-0 shutout for the hosts.
The result is another statement win for Jordan-Whitter’s squad, who are performing well above expectations in their inaugural season.
