A promising start for Bermudian tennis player Asia-Leigh Hollis and her Wheaton College (Mass.) teammates ended in a difficult season-opening defeat to Roger Williams University, 5-2.
The Wheaton Lyons, a member of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), started strongly, sweeping all three doubles matches to gain the first point of the contest. The junior duo of Laila Haraj-Sai and Hollis secured a hard-fought 6-4 victory at number two doubles.
However, the tide turned in the singles matches, where Roger Williams, a Conference of New England (CNE) member, rebounded to win five of six matches and capture the dual match.
Hollis, playing at number four singles, battled valiantly in a three-set thriller against Megan Bache. She lost the first frame, 6-3, before completely flipping the script with a dominant 6-1 showing in the second set. In a decisive final frame, Bache rebounded to win 6-4, securing a crucial point for Roger Williams.
The loss sees Wheaton College start their season 0-1, while Roger Williams improves to 3-0. Despite the defeat, Hollis's strong performance in both doubles and singles is a promising sign for the rest of her season.
