Trey Mallory and his top-seeded UNC Wilmington (UNCW) Men's Tennis teammates battled their way to a 4-1 victory over No. 4 Delaware in a rain-interrupted Semi-Final of the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Delaware snatched the doubles point in a tightly contested series of matches, claiming two of the three epic encounters. Delaware secured the first doubles point with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 match. However, the momentum was halted by inclement weather, leading to a delay of over two hours. At the time of the interruption, Delaware held a slender 6-5 lead in the No. 2 doubles, while the No. 1 doubles match was evenly poised at 5-5.
Upon the resumption of play, the No. 2 doubles match proved decisive, with Delaware's Karol Malirz and Mason Robins edging out Mallory and his partner Aleex de Gabriele in a close 7-6 tie-break.
Despite conceding the doubles point, UNCW showed their strength in the singles matches. Playing in the No. 4 singles spot, Mallory took control of his match against Delaware's Tapiro Itamar, winning the first set 7-5. He was also leading the second set 4-2 when the overall match was halted, with UNCW having already secured the four singles victories needed to clinch the 4-1 win and advance to the CAA Tournament Final.
