In a race that featured Bermuda’s Cody Sousa-Saints and Bruce Degrilla Jr was overshadowed by an accident during the warm-up.
A Statement from Indianapolis Motor Speedway Medical Director Dr. Geoffrey Billows immediately following the incident stated - USGPRU rider Peter Lenz suffered traumatic injuries in a crash on the warm-up lap of the USGPRU race Sunday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Lenz was transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Later a Statement from Stewart Aitken-Cade, Chief Steward, USGPRU stated:
“USGPRU rider Peter Lenz, age 13, from Vancouver, Wash., suffered traumatic injuries in a crash on the warm-up lap of the USGPRU race Sunday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and succumbed to his injuries. The other rider involved in the incident was not injured.”¯
“USGPRU officials send their deepest sympathies and condolences to the Lenz family.”
Statement from the family of Peter Lenz:
“Peter Lenz passed away this morning from injuries sustained from a racing accident. On behalf of the Lenz family, we would like to thank Peter’s friends and supporters for all their help throughout the years. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, but know that Peter is racing even faster in the sky. Our thoughts and prayers are now with the other racer and his family, who were also involved in this tragedy.
Team Manager, Cyril Whitter III, said, “Both riders are OK, Degrilla Jr witnessed the accident as he was following the riders on the warm-up lap, however he was not involved.” During the race Sousa-Saints and Degrilla Jr both finished on the lead lap.
Gerloff Garrett won the 11 lap race, with Sousa-Saints finishing 17th -87.558 behind Garrett, while Degrilla Jr finished 18th only .015 of a second behind Sousa-Saints, -87.573 behind the winner.
