Playing at the Parque Central de San Juan, Calle Cerra Final Stadiun, Gavin Manders won his second match in the Americas Zone Group III when he defeated Clifford Giel in straight sets in the first game to give Bermuda the 1 – 0 lead. Manders won the first set 6 – 4 and then won the second set 6 – 2.
Na’im Azhar then took on Gian Hodgson and he went down in straight sets 6 – 1, 6 – 2.
Neal Towlson and Manders paired up for the doubles and took on Giel and Hodgson, the Bermuda pair went down in straight sets 6 – 3, 6 – 3.
Manders told www.islandstats.com, “I am a little disappointed that we did not stay up, here in Puerto Rico, however I am pleased to be the first Bermudian player to ever win a match in Group III.”
“Winning the first match in Division 3 for Bermuda in 14 years against Costa Rica was special, and then I won the second match against Aruba, I felt even better, we had a heart breaker in the doubles against Aruba, almost made more history by winning an entire tie,” concluded Manders.
