Ashley Barnes is now enjoying life in Bermuda, she is the wife of Scott Barnes and the newest member of the Bermuda Karting Association, she made her maiden appearance on the Track at the Motor Sports Park in Southside. Barnes has taken time out to do her first interview in Bermuda with www.islandstats.com who was at the track to witness the action. Today we bring you Part Two a Two Part Interview with Barnes
Q. What type of competition do you think Bermuda has to offer?
A. Alot! Of course I’m my husband’s #1 fan but everyone down at that race track has the chance to be great. I know a few guys down there that go away for national races, of course you’re going to have bad races but all in all there are some impressive titles in the U.S. for some guys from Bermuda. Scott Barnes has won a few races that Road America at Elkhardt Lake Wisconsin that is a road race. He has won a "rock" which everyone in Karting knows it is from the biggest street race in North America located in Rock Island, IL over Labor Day weekend. Jason North has also won a few "rocks" (meaning first place in their class) and many other championships states side.
Q. Who is the biggest influence on your Racing career?
A. Growing up my dad was, he believed in my talent and my drive and helped push me to succeed and achieve the achievements I have. As of right now I would say that my husband, Scott Barnes, is my biggest influence. Besides being my sponsor (love you Honey) he knows that with a little time I could be as good as I once was. He pushes me to not give up and to have a good time. We love each other and competing together on the same track at the same time brings us so much closer. After all, we did meet at a race track while racing each other, I beat him, but he doesn't like to tell people that.
Q. Who inspired you to Race?
A. My dad did, he is so amazing when it comes to racing and engineering. Growing up he like muscle cars and collected quite a few he dragged raced through his 20's. He then had 2 kids, one of which was a boy who he taught to race dirt bikes, him and my older brother (Robbie) raced enduro's for many years which is riding dirt bikes through wooded trails and streams and things, like cross country skiing but with a dirt bike. After that my dad had my brother (Zachary) and I, when my dad turned 50 he got into go kart racing, at the time he was the only one who raced, he was quite good and won a few local championships. Soon after my dad began racing, my younger brother began racing the JR class, a year or so later I thought "well if he can do it, so can I" so then I began racing the class above my brother. Eventually my dad stopped racing to focus on my brother and I and we continued racing. My brother is now 20 years old and a student at Stout University in Wisconsin, he still races now and then but isn't into it like he used to be. When I turned about 20 I slowed down on racing, I worked as parc ferme director for a while and raced a few races here and there. Thank god I met Scott and he brought my passion back to life and now we can race together and share the joy that we both have.
