Commonwealth Games Spotlight - Flora Duffy

IslandStats.com
A total of Eighteen (18) athletes will represent Bermuda at the XX Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23rd to August 3rd, 2014.

Today www.islandstats.com continues with the Spotlight on an athlete that will be vying for Medals at the Games. We bring you Triathlete Flora Duffy.

Name: Flora Duffy

Date of Birth: 9/30/1987

Q. What is something many people don’t know about you?
A.
I’m scared of lizards.

Q. How did you first get involved in Triathlon?
A.
My first Triathlon was the Iron Kid triathlon at Clearwater Beach. I was 8 years old, and decided to enter because I liked Swimming and Rrunning so figured I would give a Triathlon a go.

Q. Did you have a particular Triathlon idol?
A.
No.

Q. When did you realize that you wanted Compete Internationally?
A.
As soon as I finished my first Triathlon- so at 8 years old.

Q. What would you describe as your strongest discipline?
A.
I’d say the cycling. My coach (Neal Henderson) is one of the best Cycling coaches in the world so naturally I ride a variety of bikes well.

Q. Which do you feel needs the most improvement?
A.
My running. I am constantly on the edge of either being injured or injured so find it difficult to maintain consistency with my training. Lack of consistency in training makes it difficult to improve.

Q. What one moment in your Sport to date are you most proud of?
A.
Commonwealth Games 2006- that was my first international event. I was 18 years old and barely made the Bermuda team. I had an amazing race and a top finishing result. That race proved to myself and others that I had what it took to make this a career.

Q. What are your goals for the rest of 2014?
A.
The main focus will be Xterra World Championships in Maui at the end of October. Between now and then I will do a few ITU events and some other Xterras. I am currently leading the US Xterra series and hope to win that. The final race is at the end of September in Ogden, Utah.

Q. Can you give an insight into an average week of training for you?
A.
An average week consists of about 25 hours of training. Then of course there is the rehab/recovery part (massages, physic, chiro), which differs depending if I am injured or not, but about 2 hours a week on a good week.

Q. Is this your first Commonwealth Games?
A.
No, I competed in the 2006 Games in Melbourne.

Q. What do you do when you’re not taking part in Triathlon?
A.
That is a good question! Training takes up a lot of my time. I really enjoy baking so that is what I gravitate to. My bake goods tend to be quite alternate though because they are generally vegan, sugar free and gluten free. I try and bake as clean as I can- I’m a bit of a health nut. That is what happens when you live in Boulder, CO.
Other than that I enjoy reading and catching up with friends over coffee or drinks downtown.
