Following a rain delay start, 16-year-old Phillips took to the court to face 18-year-old Mexican Edson Sanchez who is ranked 134 to 350.
Phillips started strong, taking a 4 – 2 lead, but could not capitalize on it after suffering from the altitude that affected is breathing. Sanchez who was struggling early with Phillips’ pace returns began to get the upper hand, as Phillips’ struggling health bean to take its toll.
Eventually, Sanchez was able to win the first set 7 - 5.
On to the second set and Phillips continued to struggle, he would find himself down 3 - 1 quickly, he then required a medical break, with the medical team stating that he was very dehydrated.
Following the break, Phillips showed the determination to want to make a comeback, winning the fifth game to make it 3 – 2, Sanchez would then win two of the next three games to take a 5 – 3, lead before a 2-hour rain delay took everyone off the courts.
When play did resume, Sanchez would hold his serve and win the second set 6 -3.
