Heartbreak in Saint Lucia: Bermuda Pairs Exit Championships

IslandStats.com
The sun-soaked sands of Cul de Sac witnessed a day of high drama and ultimate disappointment for Bermuda, as both the men’s and women’s pairings saw their 2026 Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Senior Beach Volleyball campaigns come to an end.

Despite flashes of the clinical form shown on the opening day, the pressure of the knockout stages proved a hurdle too far for the Bermuda teams in Saint Lucia.

In the Men’s Division, Benjamin Barnett and Sean Tucker began their morning with a fiercely contested final Pool match against Yahn Florent and Mervin Mingo of St. Kitts & Nevis. After claiming a tight opening set, the Bermudians were pulled into a physical battle at the net, eventually succumbing 2-1, with scores of 18-21, 21-14, 15-12.

Despite the loss, their earlier results were enough to secure a spot in the Quarter-Finals, where they faced a formidable Saint Vincent and the Grenadines duo, Julian Bristol and Elkreen Morton. In a match defined by narrow margins and tactical serving, Barnett and Tucker were unable to find the decisive breakthroughs needed, falling in straight sets 21-17, 21-17 to exit the competition.

There was similar frustration in the Women’s Division for Hailey Trott and Kayley Hamilton. Entering their final Pool A fixture with everything to play for, the Bermudian pair faced a clinical Dominica side featuring Joyan Pascal and Adicia Burton.

Trott and Hamilton fought valiantly in the opening exchanges, but the Dominican pair’s defensive coverage proved the difference. A 21-18, 21-13 defeat confirmed that the Bermudian duo would fail to advance to the Quarter-Finals, bringing a premature end to a campaign that had shown such promise on day one.

While the results mark a difficult conclusion to the tournament, the experience gained against the region’s elite will serve as vital preparation as the focus now shifts toward the summer’s upcoming international window.

Mixed Fortunes for Bermuda on Day 1 of ECVA Championship

IslandStats.com
The scenic sands of Cul de Sac in Saint Lucia provided a breathtaking backdrop as nine nations, including Bermuda, descended for the opening day of the 2026 Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Senior Beach Volleyball Championship.

With the tournament featuring elite pairings from across the Eastern Caribbean, the opening matches delivered immediate drama, momentum shifts, and a test of endurance in the Caribbean heat.

In the Women’s draw, Bermuda’s Hailey Trott and Kayley Hamilton endured a rollercoaster opening day. Their campaign began with a grueling three-set thriller against the host nation’s Clio Phillip and Tenayestlgni Joseph. After being outplayed in the first set, the Bermudians showed immense grit to force a decider, only to be edged out in a heart-wrenching final set, falling 2-1 (21-10, 19-21, 16-14).

However, resilience is the hallmark of this pairing. Trott and Hamilton returned to the court later in the day to face Antigua’s Dana Regis and Josanne Lewis. Despite dropping the opening set, they staged a remarkable comeback, showing superior fitness and communication under pressure to secure a vital 2-1 victory (17-21, 23-21, 15-11) and keep their qualification hopes firmly alive.

On the Men’s side, the Bermudian duo of Benjamin Barnett and Sean Tucker enjoyed a far more straightforward start to their title charge. In their lone fixture of the day against Antigua’s Dwight Bonnie and Raenor Sharpe, Barnett and Tucker produced a clinical display of power-hitting and defensive coverage.

They dispatched the Antiguan pair in straight sets, 2-0 (22-18, 21-11), looking increasingly comfortable as the match progressed. The victory places them in a strong position heading into the second day of pool play.

As the tournament shifts gears tomorrow, the focus will remain on the Cul de Sac sands as the nine-nation battle for regional supremacy intensifies.

Bermuda’s ECVA Beach Volleyball Squads Confirmed

IslandStats.com
The Bermuda Volleyball Association (BVA) has confirmed the selection of two elite pairings to represent the island at the upcoming ECVA Senior Beach Volleyball Championships in St. Lucia.

Taking place from May 1st to 3rd, the tournament will see Bermuda’s top sand specialists compete against the finest talent from across the Caribbean in a bid to solidify their standing as a regional powerhouse.

On the men’s side, all eyes will be on Ben Barnett and Sean Tucker, who return to the championship hunt following a stellar silver-medal performance in 2025. Having come within touching distance of the title last year, the pair have been vocal about their ambitions to go one step further.

"The goal for this year is simple," said Barnett. "To improve on last year’s result by bringing home gold. We’re ready to fight for it."

His partner, Tucker, echoed the sentiment, noting that the duo have utilized the off-season to refine their technical game. "Last year’s result showed what we’re capable of, and we’ve put in the work since then to come back stronger," Tucker added. "We’re focused, motivated, and ready to compete at a high level."

The women’s bracket will see a fresh partnership take to the court, as Kayley Hamilton and Hailey Trott prepare for their international debut as a duo. While the pairing is new, both athletes boast significant experience on the ECVA and NORCECA circuits, bringing a blend of defensive agility and tactical serving to the sand.

"It’s an honor to be able to represent Bermuda," Hamilton said. "The 2025 championships showed what the island is capable of, and we’re committed to defending that standard and proving we can go one step further."

Trott shared the enthusiasm for the St. Lucian challenge, stating: "We are proud to represent Bermuda, and ready to give it everything we have."

Preparation for the championships has been rigorous. The women’s team has been training under the direct guidance of National Beach Team Head Coach Ben Barnett, while both squads have benefited from the extensive technical expertise of Coach Rick Bevis.

The BVA has reiterated its commitment to strengthening Bermuda’s international presence, providing full support to the athletes as they look to transition from the local rinks to the podium in St. Lucia.

Gazzard & Weikl Top-8 Finish after Resilient Dominican Run

IslandStats.com
Bermuda’s Olivia Gazzard and Sophie Weikl have concluded their 2026 NORCECA Under-18 World Championship qualifying campaign with an eighth-place finish, marking a significant step forward for the island’s beach volleyball program.

While the final day in the Dominican Republic brought two tough defeats against high-seeded opposition, the Bermudian duo can hold their heads high after improving on last year’s tenth-place standing and gaining vital experience.

The final day of action in Juan Dolio began with high stakes in the quarter-final losers' semi-final. A victory for Gazzard and Weikl would have guaranteed a top-six finish, but they faced a daunting task against the tournament’s third seeds, Zoe Paniagua Portorreal and Yerelin Carlenis Reyes Montero.

The Dominican pair, playing in front of a vocal home crowd, utilized their height advantage and familiarity with the coastal conditions to dictate the tempo. Despite a spirited defensive effort from the Bermudians, the hosts secured a 2–0 victory (21–13, 21–10) in a 31-minute battle, relegating Gazzard and Weikl to the seventh-place play-off.

In their final outing of the tournament, the Bermuda pair found themselves in a familiar position, facing the fourth-seeded Puerto Rican duo of Ana Isabel Barcias Aponte and Coralys Perez Ortiz—opponents they had already encountered during a grueling Pool C schedule.

The familiarity between the two teams led to several long, tactical rallies, but the Puerto Ricans proved more clinical at the net. In a match that mirrored the morning session's duration, Aponte and Ortiz claimed a 2–0 win (21–13, 21–12) to secure seventh place.

Despite the final-day results, the tournament represents a clear upward trajectory for the Bermudian pair. Moving from tenth in the region to eighth within a year demonstrates the development of Gazzard and Weikl as a partnership.

Gazzard & Weikl Quarter-Final Berth before falling to Top Seeds

IslandStats.com
Bermuda’s Olivia Gazzard and Sophie Weikl produced a resurgent performance on the second day of the 2026 NORCECA Under 18 Women’s Beach Volleyball World Championship Qualifiers, clinching a vital victory to reach the knockout stages in the Dominican Republic.

After a challenging opening day on the sands of Juan Dolio, the Bermudian duo found their rhythm in their final Pool C encounter to keep their dreams of a World Championship spot alive.

Facing the Cayman Islands pairing of Julissa Kelly and Safirah Barbosa Cardenas, Gazzard and Weikl delivered a clinical display of serving and net presence. The Bermudian pair dominated from the outset, moving their opponents across the court with tactical precision to take the first set comfortably.

They maintained their intensity in the second, wrapping up a comprehensive 21–12, 21–7 victory in just 27 minutes. The win was essential for their progression, securing their place among the final eight teams in the tournament.

The reward for their pool play recovery was a formidable Quarter-Final showdown against the tournament’s number one seeds, Lauren Leach and Janie McCanna of the United States. Despite the gap in the rankings, Gazzard and Weikl refused to be intimidated by the American powerhouse. In a high-octane 25-minute battle, the Bermudians pushed the top seeds in the second set, showcasing the defensive resilience that has become their trademark on the regional circuit.

Ultimately, the technical depth of the United States pair proved the difference, with Leach and McCanna securing a 2–0 victory with scores of 21–9 and 21–18. While the defeat ends their immediate run in the main bracket, the second-set scoreline against the world-class American duo serves as a significant statement of intent. Gazzard and Weikl will now move into the placement rounds, still vying for the highest possible finish as they look toward the World Championships in the Netherlands this July.
