If you could have a superpower, what would it be? Teleportation, life would be so much easier if I could just teleport anywhere!

How did you first get into your sport?
I started playing netball in P.E. at 8 years old at BHS and have played ever since. At 16, my coach Anthony Mouchette approached my mom and encouraged me to play for Tigers.

Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model, both in and out of your sport?
My role model outside of netball is definitely my mom. She has always been there for me, whether it’s cheering from the sidelines, giving me constructive feedback, or motivating me when things get tough. Inside of netball, I’ve been inspired by the generation of players before me, especially my Aunt Debbie from Netts. She was one of the best shooters and took the time to guide me, giving me tips to improve my defense and strengthen my game. Their guidance has inspired me to want to be a role model for the next generation.

What is the most valuable lesson your sport has taught you?
Netball has taught me patience and good sportsmanship. Even when I don’t agree with a call, I’ve learned to respect the umpire and keep playing hard. This has shown me the importance of composure and respect, both on and off the court.

Tell us about your proudest moment as an athlete so far.
My proudest moment so far has been winning the Winter League with my team. We put in so much hard work, and it was incredibly rewarding to see it all pay off. The win was bittersweet, especially for our coach, who has dedicated so much time and energy to helping us grow as players.

What goes through your mind in the final moments of a close game or race?
I usually think, “It’s not over until the final whistle, keep pushing and give it your all.”

How do you handle a tough loss or a disappointing performance?
With a tough loss, if I think I played hard and did my best, then to me that’s still a win. If my performance wasn’t the best, I reflect on what I could’ve done better and how I can improve in the next game.

What’s your go-to activity when you’re not training or competing?
I have to keep moving! I usually go to the gym or for a walk. Bermuda is too beautiful to be inside all the time.

If you weren’t an athlete, what would you be doing?
I couldn’t imagine a life without sport!

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I love watching true crime.

What advice would you give to a young person aspiring to follow in your footsteps?
My advice to young players would be to never stop learning, work hard on your skills, and carry yourself with good sportsmanship. The way you play can inspire others, just like past players inspired me. And if a player inspires you, speak to them, get to know them, or even ask your coach to connect you with them. Having a mentor and building connections in the sport can make all the difference in your growth.

Finish this sentence: “My sport means…”
My sport means friendship, teamwork, discipline, and consistency, all while creating memories that will stay with me for life.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
- My superpower would be the ability to read people’s minds. I've always been curious about what people think of me. Being able to tap into those unspoken thoughts would be both interesting and eye-opening.

How did you first get into your sport?
- I began my journey with Netts Netball Club at the age of 8. I was spotted by coaches within the club who saw potential in me during school games and training sessions. They invited me to attend one of their club trainings, and I’ve been playing ever since.

Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model, both in and out of your sport?
- In my sport, I admire all of my coaches—both past and present. They’ve always given constructive criticism in a supportive way which has helped me grow as an athlete. I especially admire their work ethic and their mindset during games.

What is the most valuable lesson your sport has taught you?
- The most valuable lesson netball has taught me is the importance of teamwork and communication. It has helped me to be a team player and stay calm under pressure.

Tell us about your proudest moment as an athlete so far.
- My proudest moment as an athlete so far has been receiving my first call-up to the Senior Women’s National Netball Team.

What goes through your mind in the final moments of a close game or race?
- My mindset is very composed and tactical. I’m focused on holding possession and slowing the game down. If the chance is there—score and make every play count.

How do you handle a tough loss or a disappointing performance?
- I do ALOT of self reflection. I ask myself what went wrong, what I could’ve done differently or better. Most time, I believe I am my own worst critic so I do tend to dwell on the loss or performance a bit because I know what I’m capable of doing and the potential I have to make better choices in games.

What's your go-to activity when you're not training or competing?
- My go-to activities are listening to music or watching a good series on Netflix— Binge watching all the latest shows I’ve missed out on during the week.

What's one thing most people don't know about you?
- One thing most people don’t know about me is that I love to write and read poetry especially rhyming ones. It’s a fun way to tap into my creative side!

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party (can be anyone, living or historical)?
- Chris brown because wherever he goes, it’s guaranteed to be a show. He brings high energy, crazy dance moves, and good vibes all around.

What advice would you give to a young person aspiring to follow in your footsteps?
- Don’t compare your journey to others. I wasn’t the fastest or most confident when I started netball, but I loved the game and kept showing up. Tough moments taught me perseverance. Stay consistent, be coachable, and enjoy the journey!

Finish this sentence: "My sport means..."
- My sport means a community of players that work together, communicate positively and build lasting relationships both on and off the court. Netball has made me resilient, disciplined , have close friends, and provide so many good memories! With this, it is safe to say that I feel proud of how far I’ve come and what I’ve accomplished in this game.

How did you first get into your sport?
I first got into netball, playing in primary school at Northlands primary.

Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model, both in and out of your sport? My twin sister Jahkenya. She has had knee surgery which sat her on the bench for a while. But she's back like she never left! Her determination and drive to stay fit and to get back on the court is admirable.

What is the most valuable lesson your sport has taught you?
You win some, you lose some.

Tell us about your proudest moment as an athlete so far. Winning the 23/24 league title with the Lindos Tigers an undefeated season!

A typical week for me is walking every morning, netball training twice a week.

What’s your game-day routine? Any specific superstitions or rituals you have to follow?
No superstition or rituals. A good breakfast and making sure I get a good warm up before the game.

What goes through your mind in the final moments of a close game or race?
Strategically, if we are leading and have possession of the ball. I think try to keep possession and run minutes off the clock. If we are down, we need to stay focused, make quick and accurate passes and to get the ball in the net as quickly as posible.

Honestly? A tough loss plays in my mind for about 2 days. Good thing is there are more games to be played where there is room for improvement and possibly the win.

If you really have a passion for netball stick to it! Learn all you can, train hard and give 100% every time you get on the court.

What's one thing you hope to achieve in the next five years, both in your sport and in life?
I'm 32 so I hope I'll be married, starting a family so that I can pass on the athletic traits. The show must go on!

Given the team has been selected well in advance of the tournament, we will give you our viewers the opportunity to help celebrate the athletes prior to them representing Bermuda.

We continue the series today with Zakiyah Durham.

Your Full Name:
- Zakiyah Bil’Asia Ajeni Durham

Your Team/Club:
- Storm/ Netball Bermuda Longtails

Best pre-game hype song:
- it very well depends on my mood but usually anything soca or dancehall/reggaeton

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
- If I could have a superpower it would definitely be invisibility; personal reasons.

The Athlete's Journey
How did you first get into your sport?

- When the sport was introduced to me at Northlands Primary school, I was noticed by Tanika White who then introduced me to the actual league itself. I played for Netts growing up which is now Storm.

Who has been your biggest inspiration or role model, both in and out of your sport?
- My biggest inspiration in the sport would be the younger generation, every time I watch a game it reminds me of why I grew to love netball in the first place. My biggest role models within the sport would have to be my Godma Chanae Burgess Caines, Gina Benjamin, Marissa Brangman, Kimale Evans and Tanika White. Their drive and passion for the sport has shaped, molded and paved the way for the generations to come.

What is the most valuable lesson your sport has taught you?
- Netball has played a part in teaching me a level of patience that no one can take from me. It has also taught me that you cannot stress over things that are not in your control. It is a team sport; everyone has their role to play.

Tell us about your proudest moment as an athlete so far.
- My proudest moment being an athlete has to be becoming known/well known to the younger generation because that means I am doing something right! I know a few look up to me and even aspire to be on the level I’m on but I always tell them ‘bet better than me, don’t stop when you reach a certain level of success’. Because honestly, the sky is really the limit.

What goes through your mind in the final moments of a close game or race?
- ‘Finish as strong as you can’. ‘Stay in it Zah’. I repeat this over and over even if it isn’t the end of the game. As soon as I feel myself becoming fatigue I try to self motivate by repeating these two quotes to myself.

How do you handle a tough loss or a disappointing performance?
- I think about everything I did wrong and then overthink myself into silence. Until I get into my safe space and I remind myself of everything I did right and I just self reflect.

If you weren't an athlete, what would you be doing?
- Teaching for sure!

What's one thing most people don't know about you?
- A lot of people do not know that if I am quiet, 9 times out of 10 I am thinking about something to eat.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party (can be anyone, living or historical)?
- That is a great question that I do not have an answer to at this very moment.

Words of Wisdom
What advice would you give to a young person aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

- Don’t strive to be like me, BE BETTER! You’re only as successful as you push yourself to be. If no one believes in you, make sure YOU believe in you.

Finish this sentence: "My sport means..."
- My sport means to me what cooking means to a chef; everything.
