Philadelphia KiXX forward John Barry Nusum was inducted into the Furman University Hall of Fame.
Nusum was a 2003 graduate of Furman, playing soccer from 1998-2001. Nusum finished his career as Furman's all-time leader in career goals (61), single season points (48) and career points (161) and ranks second in Southern Conference history in career points. Nusum was a three-time first team NSCAA All-American, 2001 College Soccer News All-American (1st Team) and 2000 & 2001 College Soccer Online All-American (1st Team). In 2001, Nusum was a finalist for the Mac Hermann award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate soccer player.
Nusum guided Furman to four SoCon regular season championships, three SoCon Tournament titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances. He led the Paladins to a school-best NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals and Soccer America No. 3 final national ranking in 1999 as Furman posted a 21-2-1 record and defeated Radford, North Carolina and Wake Forest before falling to Connecticut. Nusum was a four-time first team NSCAA All-South Region pick and four-time All-SoCon selection, including first team honors in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Nusum was chosen as the 2001 Furman Male Athlete-of-the-Year and SoCon Player-of-the-Year after being named the 2000 SoCon Tournament MVP.
He notched five career hat tricks while matching the school record with four goals versus Appalachian State. Nusum helped Furman to 71-15-5 overall record and 31-1-0 SoCon record during his four-year career and led Furman to an NCAA record streak of 46 consecutive conference matches without a defeat from 1999-03. Originally drafted by Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew in third round of 2002 MLS Draft, he played professionally with Virginia Beach Mariners, Atlanta Silverbacks and Toronto Lynx of the United Soccer League. Nusum earned MISL Rookie-of-the-Year and All-Rookie Team honors in 2004-05 as a member of the KiXX and currently plays in the USL2 with the Bermuda Hogges. Nusum scored seven goals for Bermuda during the qualifying round for 2006 World Cup to rank second in goals in the CONCACAF Region. The Devonshire native was also named 2004 Bermuda Male Athlete-of-the-Year.
Nusum joined five other former Furman athletes at the ceremony, including soccer standout Clint Dempsey, who was a member of the U.S. World Cup team and currently plays for Fulham of the EPL.
