The prestigious Carlsberg Ocean View Cup is finely poised after a thrilling opening day of action left the Eastern and Western Parishes locked at three points apiece.
The tournament, which features a heavyweight clash between the top twelve finishers from the Eastern Parishes and the top twelve from the Western Parishes via the Johnnie Walker qualification standings, certainly lived up to its billing on day one.
It was the East who drew first blood. Ebonie Cox and Vincent Minors teamed up superbly to secure the opening point of the event, defeating the Western duo of Steven Almeida and Donovan Livingston.
The West hit back immediately in a fiercely contested second match. The encounter between Darriek Douglas and Kennedy Nanette of the East and the Western pair of Nick Jones and Dennis Joell could not be settled, with a dramatic draw splitting the spoils to move the scoreboard to one and a half to a half in favor of the East.
Momentum then swung firmly toward the Western Parishes. Camiko Smith and Alan Lugo put on a clinical display to defeat the East's Calvin Richardson and Sinclair Trott, leveling the overall tie.
The West then took the lead for the first time in the tournament when Jonathan James and Aaron Adams combined effectively to overcome Damon Smith and George O’Brien Jr, pushing the West ahead two and a half to one and a half.
Refusing to back down, the East clawed their way back into the contest. Kavon Trott and Leroy Robinson produced a resilient performance to defeat Ajunte Tuzo and Marcelos Thomes, restoring parity at two and a half points each.
With everything resting on the final match of the day, tension was high on the greens. Samuel Robinson and Phil Talbot representing the East went toe-to-toe with the West's Oscar Riley and Henry Ascento. In a fitting end to a remarkably balanced day of golf, the match concluded in a hard-fought draw, leaving the scores deadlocked at three-all heading into the second day.
