Consolation joy for Hamilton & Tucker in Dominican Republic

IslandStats.com
Bermuda’s elite sand specialists endured a mixed final day of play at the sixth stop of the NORCECA Continental Beach Volleyball Tour, signing off with a blend of podium near-misses and gritty consolation victories on the coast of Juan Dolio.

Following a punishing sequence of classification matches, the island's dual pairings showed plenty of character to bounce back and secure their final regional tournament rankings in the Caribbean heat.

The headline performance of the day belonged to the men's duo of Kyle Hamilton and Sean Tucker, who ended their campaign on a triumphant note by capturing a clinical victory in the 15th/16th place classification final.

Facing the U.S. Virgin Islands pairing of Jared Brown and Cole Sommer, the Bermudian tandem asserted their authority early on, dismantling their opponents' defense to claim a swift first set. While the second frame proved a far tighter, touch-and-go affair, Hamilton and Tucker held their nerve under pressure, wrapping up a comprehensive 2-0 (21-11, 21-19) victory in just 32 minutes.

There was to be no double celebration for the delegation, however, as the women's pairing of Megan Hands and Natalie Gazzard suffered an agonizing straight-sets defeat in their 11th/12th place final.

Locking horns with the formidable twin threat of Vernecia Caines and Verneeci Caines—also representing the U.S. Virgin Islands—Hands and Gazzard were embroiled in an absolute marathon opening set. The Bermudians saved multiple set points in a dramatic deuce battle before finally succumbing 27-25.

That opening set exertion clearly took its toll. Despite a valiant defensive effort in the second frame, Hands and Gazzard could not break the Caines sisters' rhythm, eventually falling to a 2-0 (27-25, 21-16) defeat in a grueling 39-minute clash to finish 12th overall.

With the demanding sixth leg of the continental tour now wrapped up, both squads will take invaluable competitive data and a hard-fought match victory back to the Atlantic as they continue their development on the international circuit.
