Thompson Announces Shock Retirement at 25

IslandStats.com
Bermuda international winger Kenni Thompson has sent shockwaves through the domestic and overseas game by announcing her immediate retirement from professional football at the age of just 25.

In a deeply candid and emotional social media post, the former Chelsea, Espanyol, Eibar and AFC Bournemouth attacker revealed that she is walking away from the sport to protect her mental well-being and rediscover her "joy for life."

Thompson, who relocated to Europe at just 11 years old to chase her sporting dreams, confessed that the burning passion that drove her rise through the elite ranks of the women's game had slowly eroded over a testing few seasons.

Reflecting on an extraordinary 14-year journey that saw her become one of the most technically gifted standard-bearers for Bermudian women's football, Thompson expressed immense pride in what she had conquered against the odds.

"Pack up everything and move across the world to chase a dream at 11 years old," Thompson wrote. "A dream of playing football professionally at the highest level and making it my career. I chased my dream and I achieved it. With hard work, tenacity and burning passion for the game I’ve represented my country and played for and against some of the biggest names in football."

However, the immense sacrifice required to maintain an elite baseline on the European continent ultimately took its toll.

"Now here I am at 25 once again making an even harder decision," she continued. "To once again pack up everything and walk away from my career, my dream, my life. This hasn’t been a decision that’s come easy. Unfortunately this has been years in the making. Bit by bit, day by day that same passion that pushed me has slowly faded. The joy for the game that always got me through the darkest moments ultimately disappeared."

The decision highlights a growing and necessary conversation surrounding athlete burnout and the immense psychological pressures faced by young players operating inside the professional bubble from a tender age.

Thompson, whose father Kenny Thompson is a legendary figure in Bermudian coaching, acknowledged that while some fans might find the sudden exit difficult to comprehend, the structural break is non-negotiable for her future happiness.

Kenni Thompson’s Career Highlights:
Elite Academies: Developed within the youth systems of Barcelona and Chelsea.
Continental Mileage: Enjoyed professional senior stints across Spain's Liga F with Espanyol, Deportivo La Coruña, and Eibar.
UK Breakthrough: Signed with English Championship side London City Lionesses.
International Pedigree: Key attacking catalyst for the Bermuda Women's National Team.

"I spent years trying to recover my joy for the sport when I should’ve been finding my joy for life and for living," she admitted. "To genuinely see the beauty in who and what I have been blessed with. To be present and not solely just exist.

"I know that an 11-year-old girl is screaming at me to change my mind. She was strong enough to go after her dream no matter what, but now I need to be strong enough to walk away. I’m sorry I let you down but I can’t let me down."

Whether this marks a permanent separation from the sport or a temporary sabbatical remains to be seen. Thompson concluded her address by leaving the door slightly ajar for the future, while firmly shifting her immediate energy toward a total personal reset.

"I will forever be grateful for the amazing people football has brought into my life. Maybe this is goodbye forever, maybe it’s not, but right now I need to do what’s best for myself and the people I care most about in the world. Current priority: peace. Reset, restart, refocus."

Her retirement leaves a massive creative void in the national team setup, but the footballing community will undoubtedly unite in supporting a young player brave enough to step off the global treadmill in search of genuine happiness.
