Downend CC 246/7 Frenchay CC 247/7
A magnificent, high-stakes century from opening batter Mike Donaldson guided Frenchay Cricket Club to a thrilling three-wicket victory over local rivals Downend in their West of England Premier Cricket League encounter.
Having won the toss on a surface that promised excellent carry, Downend elected to bat first and immediately set about building a competitive platform.
The centerpiece of their innings was a brilliant, anchoring knock from Taimour Warraich. Displaying exquisite timing and supreme patience against the new ball, Warraich compiled a commanding 77 to lay the foundations for a major first-innings total.
Frenchay’s bowling attack was forced to search deep for answers, with Bermudian international seamer Chare Smith enduring a heavy engine-room shift. Smith bowled with immense pace and determination to check the visitors' momentum, concluding his maximum 10-over spell with hard-fought figures of 2 for 70, including a vital maiden over.
Frenchay’s pursuit of 247 required an authoritative start, and Donaldson provided exactly that with an absolute masterclass of opening batting.
Taking total control of the tempo, Donaldson mixed aggressive boundary-striking with sharp running between the wickets to completely deflate the Downend bowling unit. He reached a spectacular milestone, departing the crease only after compiling a sublime 102 to put his side within touching distance of the target.
Downend refused to bow out quietly, launching a spirited late counterattack led by the clinical Andrew McEwan. McEwan targeted the lower order with a sharp, disciplined spell, returning figures of 2 for 35 from his six overs to trigger a brief, nervous collapse in the home dugout.
The tension mounted as the wickets fell, but the baseline depth of the Frenchay batting card ultimately held firm. With the middle order showing immense composure to tick off the remaining runs, Frenchay crossed the line at 247 for 7 with overs to spare.
Smith, waiting in the pavilion, was not required to contribute. Downend CC Inning
