The opening weekend of the Bermuda Cricket Board league season has been defined by a series of individual masterclasses, as St. David’s Cricket Club and Warwick Workmen’s Club asserted their dominance across the Premier and First Divisions.
On a day where the balance between bat and ball shifted dramatically from ground to ground, it was the all-round brilliance of Isaiah O’Brien that stole the headlines at Lord’s.
O’Brien produced arguably the most complete performance of the weekend for St. David’s, first dismantling the Somerset Cricket Club attack to post a magnificent 106. His century provided the backbone for a formidable total, but he was far from finished. Returning with the ball, O’Brien proved equally devastating, claiming four wickets for just 12 runs in a clinical four-over spell.
He was well supported by the evergreen Derrick Brangman, who tore through the lower order to finish with four wickets for 16 runs from just 3.1 overs, ensuring a comprehensive victory for the Islanders.
The First Division also bore witness to triple-figure fireworks at the Somerset Cricket Club, where Ras Solomon Burrows spearheaded a successful chase for Willow Cuts. Burrows reached a sublime 100 to anchor the innings, capitalising on the earlier work of teammate Micah Simons. Simons had set the stage with a disciplined opening spell, returning figures of four wickets for 16 runs to restrict the opposition and provide the platform for Burrows’ batting heroics.
Meanwhile, Warwick Workmen’s Club signaled their intent for the season with a professional display led by the experienced Malachi Jones. In a spell of remarkable control and precision, Jones conceded just 11 runs from his four overs while picking up four vital wickets, including two maidens.
The chase was made to look elementary by Tre Manders, who remains one of the most consistent run-scorers in the domestic game. Manders finished unbeaten on 77, striking the ball with authority to guide Warwick to a comfortable win and ensure they begin their campaign with maximum points.
