Brianna Ray has etched her name into the history books as the first female cricketer to feature in Bermuda’s Premier Division, reflecting on a landmark weekend for Somerset Cricket Club that proved as challenging as it was historic.
While the final results did not go in Somerset’s favor, the significance of the weekend was not lost on Ray. Having made the high-profile switch from Flatts Victoria in the off-season, the international all-rounder admitted that the anticipation had been building for months.
"It felt amazing to have the season start back up again," Ray told islandstats.com. "The lead-up into it felt really long, but the guys at Somerset have been working so hard over the winter and pre-season, so it was well-awaited."
Stepping into the top flight of the domestic game brought a natural mix of nerves and determination, particularly with the West Enders facing a grueling double-header against elite opposition.
"In the lead-up to the weekend, I had a lot of anxious energy as it was going to be my first games for Somerset and both games were to be against really strong opponents," Ray admitted. "I wanted to perform well for both the team and coach Janeiro Tucker."
Despite the pressure, Ray demonstrated she belonged at the level. After a tough opening over on Saturday, she found her rhythm, notably claiming the prized wicket of St. David’s centurion Isaiah O’Brien and delivering a disciplined spell during the high-pressure "death" overs.
The West Enders' weekend was marred by a dramatic batting collapse against St. David’s, where they lost seven wickets for just ten runs late in the chase, ultimately falling 22 runs short of their target. Despite the brace of defeats, Ray remains optimistic about the depth of talent within the squad.
"It was a shame we were not able to take either game over the line this weekend, but there is still plenty of cricket to come this summer," she noted.
"Somerset has so much potential this season and I am very excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us. We have created a great environment as a team and it can only go up from here."
