FH Hafnarfjörður Women have finally got their Besta deild kvenna campaign up and running, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Grindavik/Njardvik to claim their first three points of the Icelandic top-flight season.
It took just eight minutes for the deadlock to be broken, and it was Bermudian international Nia Christopher who provided the spark. Following a period of industrious work in the midfield, a clinical searching ball was played over the top of the Grindavik/Njardvik defence.
Christopher showcased her trademark pace, outstripping her marker to reach the ball first. With the advancing goalkeeper caught in no-man's land, the striker showed remarkable composure to skip around the challenge and slide the ball into an unguarded net.
The hosts were forced to weather a significant storm following the opener, and their resilience was finally breached four minutes before the interval. Danai Kaldaridou found the target for Grindavik/Njardvik in the 41st minute, ensuring the sides went into the tunnel level at 1-1.
The defining moment of the contest arrived in the 64th minute when FH Hafnarfjörður were awarded a penalty. Christopher, looking for her second of the afternoon, stepped up to take the spot-kick.
While her initial effort was well-saved by the opposition keeper, the rebound fell kindly for Ingibjorg Magnusdottir. Magnusdottir was the quickest to react, ghosting past the static defenders to turn the ball home and restore the lead.
Despite late pressure from the visitors, FH held firm to protect their slender advantage and register a result that could prove pivotal for their momentum in the top tier.
