Bermuda’s elite female golfers have seized control of the 46th Kitty Michael Invitational, ending the opening day at the summit of the leaderboard following a masterclass in windy conditions. Led by the formidable pairing of Captain Tracy Burgess and Vice Captain Maria Harris, the ten-player squad navigated the treacherous trade winds of the Old Quarry Golf Course to distance themselves from the international field.
The performance has placed Bermuda in the coveted first-place position in both the Gross and Net Team Events. It was a day defined by individual brilliance as much as collective depth, with the squad of Valerie Nearon, Tracy Nash, Ann Symonds, Katyna Rabain, Lesley Wollman, Katrin Burnie, Angela Cook, and Jomari Vosloo all contributing to a dominant display of Caribbean golf.
Burgess set the pace in the Gross Division, carding an authoritative eight-over par 80. Her round was a rollercoaster of high-level scoring, featuring three Birdies and nine Pars that offset a difficult triple Bogey. Meanwhile, Harris underscored Bermuda’s versatility by topping the Net Division at even par. Harris produced a card that included seven pars but was anchored by her ability to recover from a quadruple bogey to maintain her position at the top of the individual standings.
The team’s gross total was further bolstered by Ann Symonds, who battled through the gusty conditions to sign for a sixteen-over par 88. Symonds managed to find the cup for a birdie and kept her round steady with a string of ten bogeys, ensuring Bermuda remained the team to beat as the sun set on the first day of play.
In the Net Team standings, Bermuda’s advantage was cemented by a trio of impressive scores. Beyond Harris’s leading effort, Lesley Wollmann delivered a sharp three-over par 75 that was highlighted by a remarkable five birdies. Ann Symonds also proved her value in the net category, carding a five-over par 77 that featured four birdies of her own. As the tournament progresses, the Bermuda team carries significant momentum into the final rounds. Their blend of veteran experience and clinical execution under pressure has established them as the firm favorites to secure the overall title at this prestigious international showpiece.
