Rain Denies Frenchay in Season Opener Against Bishopston

IslandStats.com
MATCH ABANDONED

Bishopston CC 159 Frenchay CC 39/1

The arrival of the new cricket season was met with a familiar frustration this weekend as the "heavens opened" to deny Chare Smith and his Frenchay Cricket Club teammates a winning start to their West of England Premier Cricket League (WEPL) campaign.

The Bristol and North Somerset Division 50-over opener against Bishopston was finely poised when the weather intervened, leaving Frenchay to wonder what might have been after a dominant display with the ball.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Frenchay’s bowling attack looked clinical. Bermudian international Chare Smith led the charge from one end, returning impressive figures of 3-31 from his eight overs. He was ably supported by Shalinda Arachchige, who proved almost impossible to get away, claiming 3-16 as Bishopston were bundled out for a modest 159. Only Dominic Hooper offered significant resistance for the visitors, striking a gritty 53.

The chase began with similar composure. Frenchay had reached 39 for the loss of just one wicket after 11 overs, with Mike Donaldson (15) steadying the ship. Daniel McCudden had provided the solitary breakthrough for Bishopston, but the hosts appeared to be in firm control of the required run rate.

However, a sudden afternoon deluge halted play, forcing the officials to abandon the contest. While both sides walk away with a share of the points, Frenchay will likely feel the more aggrieved, having put themselves in a commanding position to secure maximum points on home soil.

The focus for Smith and his side now shifts to next weekend, with the weather forecast—and the form of their seam attack—remaining the primary talking points at the Frenchay ground.
