Nahki Wells and Luton Town kept their Premier League promotion dreams firmly alive this afternoon with a clinical 2-0 victory over Rotherham United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.
The Hatters traveled north knowing that nothing less than three points would suffice in their pursuit of a play-off berth. While the victory provides a significant boost to their momentum, the mathematical reality of the table remains unchanged; Luton remain in seventh place, agonisingly poised just three points outside the crucial promotion spots. The performance, however, will give the Kenilworth Road faithful plenty of heart as the season reaches its dramatic crescendo.
Further down the footballing pyramid, there was late-night drama at Edgar Street as Keziah Martin’s Hereford FC secured a vital win in National League North. Welcoming Marine to their historic home, the Bulls appeared to be heading toward a frustrating draw until the very final moments of the contest. In the 90th minute, Hereford were awarded a penalty, which was duly converted to spark jubilant celebrations and seal a 2-1 victory that keeps their own seasonal objectives within reach.
The most significant celebrations of the day, however, were reserved for Reggie Lambe and Needham Market FC. Competing at the Bury Town grounds, Lambe was the architect of his side’s triumph in the Endeavour Auto Suffolk Premier Cup Final against Felixstowe and Walton United.
The Bermudian international demonstrated his trademark composure in the 38th minute when Needham were awarded a penalty. Lambe stepped up and smartly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, clipping the ball home off the bottom of the right-hand post to break the deadlock.
Needham doubled their advantage just before the interval and added a third in the second half to wrap up a comprehensive 3-0 win. With Lambe’s opening strike proving to be the match-winner, he led his teammates to be crowned Suffolk Premier Cup Champions, adding yet another piece of silverware to his distinguished career.
