The 2026 Bermuda Match Play Championship was turned on its head at Port Royal Golf Course as a day of dramatic upsets and marathon matches saw the tournament’s heavyweights tumble out of the bracket.
After a morning plagued by thunder showers, the sun eventually broke through the Southampton clouds, but for the top seeds, the weather was the least of their worries. In a day defined by "giant-killing" performances, the Men's Championship and Senior divisions were blown wide open ahead of Sunday’s semi-finals.
The biggest shock of the day came in the quarter-finals when James Godwin produced the performance of a lifetime to dismantle top seed Jarryd Dillas. Dillas, who had looked imperious in his 5 & 4 morning victory over Scott Barnett, found himself on the back foot against an inspired Godwin. Maintaining his composure across the iconic cliffside stretch, Godwin sealed a 3 & 1 victory to send the defending champion packing.
He wasn't the only top seed to fall. In the Senior Men's Division, Christopher Phillips orchestrated a masterful 3 & 1 win over number one seed Sheldon Chychrun. With second seed Craig Christensen also suffering a heavy 8 & 7 defeat at the hands of Alec Anderson, the senior bracket will see a completely fresh set of faces battling for the title tomorrow.
The Round of 16 in the morning provided a glimpse of the drama to come, with two matches requiring extra holes to find a winner. Robbie Bailey outlasted Andrew MacFarlane in a 19-hole thriller, while Daniel Holland survived a 20-hole odyssey against Dan Roy to keep his hopes alive.
However, the physical toll of those extra holes appeared to weigh on the victors. Bailey was subsequently brushed aside 6 & 5 by Jonathan James in the quarters, while Holland eventually succumbed to a 2-up defeat against the teenage sensation Oliver Betschart. Betschart, a Port Royal specialist who recently made history on the junior circuit, remains the highest-ranked seed left in the competition after a dominant day that included an 8 & 6 demolition of Lewis MacFarlane.
The stage is now set for a fascinating Sunday of high-stakes match play. In the Men’s Championship, the giant-killer Godwin faces the clinical James, while second seed Arman Newton—who battled through a tough 3 & 2 win over Johnny Bart—takes on the momentum-heavy Betschart.
In the Senior ranks, Phillips will look to continue his underdog run against Ian Page, who edged a 1-up nail-biter earlier in the day. On the other side of the bracket, the dominant Alec Anderson faces Geoffrey Piggott in what promises to be a battle of attrition.
With the favorites watching from the gallery, Port Royal is poised to crown a new set of champions in what has become one of the most unpredictable Match Play championships in recent memory.
