Oliver Betschart produced the round of the tournament on Tuesday to secure a podium finish at the Puerto Rico Junior Island Championships, headlining a successful week for Bermuda’s young golfing contingent.
Competing at the Grand Reserve Golf Club, Betschart saved his best for the final round of the Boys International Division. The teenager carded a superb three-under-par 69—the lowest score of the day across the field—to climb the leaderboard and finish in a tie for third at two-over-par overall. His clinical closing performance, which featured seven birdies and eight pars, left him just two shots adrift of local winner Ayden Febres and Brazil’s Guilherme Yoshikawa.
The silverware stayed in the family as Darina Betschart claimed victory in the Girls 15-and-Under division. After leading for the duration of the tournament, Darina finished at 27-over-par following a final-round 81. Her consistent play throughout the 54 holes was enough to secure a 12-stroke victory over her nearest rival, Marena Fontanet, and earned her a tie for ninth place in the overall Girls International standings.
In the same division as Oliver, Arman Newton displayed grit during a testing final round. Newton carded an eight-over-par 80 to finish the championships in 32nd place with a total of 27-over-par. Despite the challenging conditions in Rio Grande, his final scorecard included three birdies and six pars, providing a solid finish to a high-pressure week of international competition.
With a podium spot and a divisional title secured, the Bermudian trio depart Puerto Rico having made a significant impact on the regional stage. For Oliver Betschart, his record-setting final round serves as a powerful statement of intent as he continues to establish himself as one of the island's most promising young talents.
