Bermuda’s elite collegiate sailors experienced a weekend of contrasting results as they navigated the high-velocity tactical demands of the Aaron Szambecki Team Race.
The prestigious Cross Regional Regatta, contested in technical 420 and FJ class boats, drew some of the premier sailing programs in the United States to test their early-season coordination and strategic depth.
Christian Ebbin and his Tulane University teammates enjoyed a productive opening to the regatta, firmly establishing themselves among the frontrunners. Demonstrating the clinical team-race maneuvers that have become their trademark, the Green Wave finished the initial sessions in a tie for fourth place. Boasting a strong record of seven wins and just three defeats, Ebbin remains in a prime position to challenge for the podium as the competition intensifies.
In contrast, it proved to be a testing outing for Paul Rodrigues Jr. and Jordan Vieira representing Eckerd College. The Tritons found themselves locked in a series of grueling, tightly contested duals that highlighted the unforgiving nature of the regional circuit.
Despite flashes of tactical brilliance from the Bermudian pair, Eckerd College ended the opening rounds in 10th place overall. The team currently holds a record of two wins and nine defeats. However, with further rounds of racing on the horizon, Rodrigues Jr. and Vieira will be looking to leverage their extensive international experience to spark a climb up the leaderboard and refine their synergy ahead of the upcoming conference championships.
