A lone match-up in the Bermuda Ball Hockey Winter League delivered high-octane drama last night, requiring a decisive shootout to separate Positive Image Dental and CG at the PCC Hockey Rink.
In a thrilling contest that saw CG rally from a significant deficit, it was eventually Jordan Gunter of Positive Image Dental who stepped up to net the game-winning goal in the shootout, securing a hard-fought 5-4 victory for his side.
The opening period was a flurry of action, with Positive Image Dental establishing an early grip on the game. Jordan Gunter opened the scoring before CG briefly levelled the contest through Dallas Montgomery.
Positive Image Dental quickly retook the lead and pressed their advantage, with goals coming from Brad Blassetti and Sean McNulty, giving them a clear lead heading into the second stanza.
The middle period saw the scoring slow down, but Positive Image Dental maintained their control. Brett Williamson found the back of the net to extend his team's lead, leaving CG with a mountain to climb as they entered the final period.
The game shifted dramatically in the third period as CG staged an incredible comeback, spearheaded by a phenomenal individual performance from Dallas Montgomery.
Montgomery scored not one, but three unanswered goals to single-handedly wipe out the deficit. His first came with an assist from Owen Siese. Montgomery then added two more, with both goals being set up by Jeremy Estey, completing a remarkable hat-trick and forcing the game into overtime with the score tied at 4-4.
The five-minute overtime period proved to be a tense affair. Both sides had chances to clinch the victory but both defences, and likely the goalies, held firm. With neither team able to find the winner, the match was sent to a deciding shootout.
In the subsequent shootout, Jordan Gunter once again proved the difference-maker. The Positive Image Dental forward converted his opportunity, and with no further scoring, his goal was enough to seal the 5-4 victory for Positive Image Dental.
